Aug. 23 — Greg Zipp and Elaine Headden were honored by the Union City Civitan Club as the Union City High School Athletes of the Year for the 1978-79 school year. Zipp, who signed to play college football at Auburn, was an All-State football player his senior season. Meanwhile, Headden was a key component of both the girls’ basketball squad and track team.
Aug. 26 — South Fulton left Stewart County all wet on a soggy West Tennessee night and with the bitter taste of defeat in its mouth. The Red Devils blanked the Tigers 14-0 in the prep football opener for both teams. South Fulton got its first score when Tony Ingram bounced in from three yards out and the locals put the game away with 1:24 remaining after a 16-yard interception return to paydirt by Mike Hutchens. Overall, SF’s defense was the story of the game as they allowed just 39 yards to SC with just three of those being of the rushing nature.

Aug. 21 — A trio of outstanding Union City High School athletes were inducted into the school’s Hall of Honors. David Cox, Wright Jernigan and John Parham were all enshrined into the UCHS fraternity that honors its best in athletics. Cox was an All-State football performer in 1988 and Jernigan was the state shot put and discus champion in 1989. Parham’s individual accomplishments were not shabby either as he was All-State in basketball, both as a junior and senior.

Aug. 25 — Josh Johnson threw a pair of touchdown passes to lead Hillcrest in a 24-0 blanking of Trenton at the Crockett County Junior High Football Jamboree. Johnson connected with Steven Crane and Cory Robertson for the scores. Meanwhile, Josh Hairston took in the Cougars third score — a 15-yard scamper.

Aug. 22 — Jackson Central-Merry assistant football coach Larry Shanks was honored with the AFLCAC Insurance national assistant coach of the year award. Shanks began his coaching career at Fulton City.
Aug. 25 — The Jimmy Fishel Era at Union City began with a loss. The Twisters fell to Jackson Central-Merry 28-10 in the long-time assistant’s debut as a head coach. UC held a 3-0 lead after a 31-yard field goal by John Graham in the first quarter. However, JCM reeled off three touchdowns that the Twisters had little answer for during the second half. Down 21-3, Ben Ferguson connected with Kennth Fouse from 60 yards out for the only UC touchdown during the defeat.

Laws led the Lady Tornadoes in hitting during both her junior and senior seasons. As a junior, she batted .571 and she posted a .437 average as a senior. She also was honored as the team’s most valuable player during her junior campaign.
Aug. 27 — South Fulton got its first on-field victory since 2005 with a 26-19 win over Ballard Memorial. In 2006, SF’s only triumph was a paper 1-0 forfeit win over Fulton City. In the victory over the Bombers, the Devils got a safety from Bart Netherland for their first points of the ’07 campaign before the ground game kicked into effect. Halfback Jonathan Avent broke free for a 64-yard score and fullbacks Tyler Morris and Skylar Cherry each dove in from one yard out during the victory.
