GREAT AMERICAN HIGHWAY

GREAT AMERICAN HIGHWAY — From a vantage point high in the sky, the unfinished Interstate-69 can be seen running along Discovery Park of America — Union City’s educational and entertainment museum. The long strips of roadbed are easily visible from the 110-foot tall Barbara Lynn Tanner Cooper Tower and generate lots of questions from visitors far and wide. The original intention of I-69 was to connect Canada to Mexico through Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas. After federal funding for the project was pulled, the Tennessee Department of Transportation made the decision to stop working on I-69 in 2012. However, in 2015, TDOT officials determined there would be value in finishing just enough of I-69 to link it to I-55, the major north to south route that runs through Memphis and down to the Gulf Coast.
