John retired from United Family Insurance, Brown Shoe Company and the Selmer Volunteer Fire Department.
On Aug. 16, 1958, he married the love of his life, Virginia “Jenny” Canaday Dyer in Union City. Their life together was built on a foundation of faith in their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. They loved their children and grandchildren and left a legacy of faith, commitment and love.

He was very active in community organizations throughout his life, including the Jaycees and Masons. In addition, he served 34 years on the Selmer Volunteer Fire Department retiring in 2000. He served as the Chief for the last 25 years and was instrumental in upgrading the department during his tenure to add stations, services and equipment, ultimately leading to Selmer becoming a full-time department.
