Week 3 Football Roundup
Union City 20, Dyer County 7
The Golden Tornadoes wore down the Choctaws with a strong defense and a punishing ground game on offense to pick up their first win of the 2023 season.
Union City gained 279 total yards, all on the ground while limiting DC to just 126 yards Friday night at War Memorial Stadium/Randy Barnes Field.
Keaten Brown scored the Twisters’ only offensive touchdown with a 32-yard run early in the third quarter.
Meanwhile, Finn Frankum was perfect on four kicks, hitting field goals of 34 and 20 yards while also adding a pair of extra points.
Defensively, Adrian Crawford highlighted UC’s effort with an 81-yard interception return for a score just before halftime.
Crawford, Aiden Reid and Jacob Arnold all had seven tackles for UC.
For the third straight week, Union City did not compete a pass (0-for-3).
Union City has now finished its pre-Region 7-1A schedule with a 1-2 record and will open league play Sept. 8 at Gleason.
Obion Central 35, Jackson North Side 25
The Rebels are still perfect, thanks mainly to Hamilton May.
OC’s quarterback was responsible for all five Rebel touchdowns as he ran for two, threw for two and returned an interception for another as Central ran its record to 3-0 with Friday night’s win at Troy.
May had TD runs of 26 yards (first quarter) and 69 yards (fourth) and also connected on a 10-yard TD pass to Kevyn Alfter (second) and a 68-yard strike to Bryson Underwood (third).
In all, he rushed for 205 yards on 19 carries and completed 7-of-8 passes for 101 yards.
His pick six covered over 70 yards, that coming in the third period.
The Indians put up some big numbers as well, totaling 381 yards and scoring four touchdowns.
Quarterback Carson Graves hit 10-of-15 passes for 153 yards and a TD but also threw two interceptions, Underwood getting the other just before halftime.
Tipton-Rosemark 21, South Fulton 14
Aidan Petrowski hauled in a 68-yard touchdown pass from Jackson Cullen with 3:54 remaining in the game to give TR the win over South Fulton Friday night at SF.
It was the only score of the second half after the teams traded scores in the first half.
Nix Cullen gave TR a 6-0 lead on a one-yard run at 2:23 of the first quarter, but SF struck back just 15 seconds later when Brady McFarland found Josh McKnight for a 65-yard TD pass.
Charlie Mike Mulcahy’s kick gave SF a 7-6 lead.
McFarland then connected with Jonathan Doss for a 7-yard TD at 5:54 of the second frame, Mulcahy making it 14-6.
But, TR answered with 45 seconds left in the half as Fullen hit Carson Funk with a 21-yard TD. Nix Fullen ran in the conversion to tie the game.
McFarland completed 18-of-33 passes for 301 yards.
