TEENAGER REMEMBERED — Justin Smith (third from left) leaned in to see a sign designating Highway 22 through Samburg for his late brother, Chandler Joe Smith. The unveiling ceremony was held Saturday morning and also included Chandler’s parents, Amanda and Samburg Mayor Tim “Timbo” Smith. Removing the covering for all to see the sign were Zach Blakley (second from right) and Jake Osborne. Driving the tractor was (not pictured) Bubba Blakely. Chandler died at the age of 15 in an accident Feb. 22, 2020, during a high school fishing tournament. Gallatin residents Ed and Betty Mayberry (not pictured), who have a second home in Samburg, have fond memories of Chandler and wanted the community to have a way to always remember the local teenager. They reached out to the Tennessee Department of Transportation to seek guidance on naming Highway 22 inside the city limits of Samburg after Chandler. They then got unanimous support from the Samburg board of aldermen, with state Rep. Rusty Grills and state Sen. John Stevens supporting it through the Legislature.
