John Sutton

John Gary Sutton, age 84, passed away on Feb. 9, 2026.
Graveside services are scheduled for 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2026, at Land of Memory Cemetery in Palestine, Texas. Services are in the care of Herrington/Land of Memory.
John was the ninth of ten children, born on March 8, 1941, in Elbridge to James Herbert and Virgie D. McCoy Sutton. He faithfully served his country in the United States military for 20 years, including many years stationed in Germany, before retiring from service. Following his military career, John moved to Copperas Cove, Texas, later he dedicated more than 16 years of service to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. He embraced a country lifestyle, taking great pride in tending his land and caring for his cows. John was also a devoted volunteer at the local VA, continuing his lifelong commitment to serving others. He cherished time spent with his family and with his loyal companion and best friend, Shadow, his beloved German Shepherd.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley; parents, James and Virgie D. Sutton; grandson, Earon Davis; and family members, Margaret Argo, Ralph Sutton, Vernell Sellers, Pappy Sutton, Jo Ann Sutton, Shirley Harrison and Jannea Davis. 
Survivors include son, Gary Sutton; daughters, Teresa Davis, Ann Blanks and Janet Sutton; brother, Mac Sutton and wife, Shirley; grandchildren, Don, Leslie, Kelly, Rikki, Alechia, Jon, Devon, April, Mary and Ethan; as well as several great-grandchildren.
