WET WIN — The Union City Fire Department team (left) of firefighter Reed Logan (front) and probationary firefighter Kyle Kennedy eased ahead at the turn around a fountain against the Hope Center Ministries team (right) of Josh Hayes (front) and Colby Tolliver during 12th annual Cardboard Boat Regatta held Saturday morning on the South Lake at Discovery Park of America. The UCFD finished in first and the Hope Center in second of the adult division. Teams’ boats were constructed using only cardboard and duct tape before being launched for races that featured divisions for adults or youth. In addition, there was an instant cardboard boat regatta where teams built boats on-site Saturday, rather than in advance. Prizes were awarded in several categories, including the Van Gogh Award for creativity, All Hands on Deck Award for team spirit, Titanic Award for most spectacular sinking and MacGyver Award for the on-the-spot instant winner.
