Nancy Hurt

Nancy Lou Bunch Hurt, 84, of Trimble passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, May 7, 2025.
Born on Jan. 19, 1941, in Samburg, she was the daughter of the late Elmer Anderson Bunch and the late Reggie Hayes Bunch. She married Robert Ell Hurt on June 10, 1966, and together they shared a life filled with love, service and commitment to education and community.
A 1958 graduate of the former Hornbeak High School, Mrs. Hurt continued her education at the University of Tennessee at Martin, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in secondary education in 1962. During her time at UT Martin, she was a charter member of the Xi Zeta Chapter of the Chi Omega Sorority. Following graduation, she briefly worked as a stewardess for Delta Airlines before returning to her passion for teaching.
In 1973, she received a Master of Science degree from Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro. Her teaching career spanned several schools including Ridgely, Donelson High School and Bellevue High School in Nashville. She concluded her distinguished career with a 30-year tenure at Dyer County High School in Newbern, leaving a lasting legacy on generations of students.
Mrs. Hurt was deeply involved in her community. She was a charter member and former president of the Trimble Area Women’s Civic Club, and a dedicated member of the Trimble Lions Club since the inclusion of women in 2002. In recognition of her service, she was honored with the Dolstrum Award in 2012. Her contributions to education and service extended to her alma mater as well, where she served on the University of Tennessee’s Women’s Council and received the UT Martin Chancellor’s Award for University Service in 2010.
A woman of strong faith, Mrs. Hurt was a loyal and active member of First Baptist Church in Trimble.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, May 12, 2025, at Trimble First Baptist Church, with Dr. Rick Isbell, Mr. J.B. Murphy and Mr. Dan Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Poplar Grove Cemetery in Newbern. Visitation will be held on Monday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Trimble.
She leaves to cherish her memory, one son, Rob Hurt (Debbie) of Trimble; one daughter, Rachel Payne (Chris) of Gallatin; seven grandchildren, Cooper Hurt, Conner Hurt, Nick Hurt , Katelyn Eichler (Cody,) Emiline Orf (Sam), Christopher Payne and Luke Payne; and two great-grandsons, Dayton and James.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Ell Hurt; two sisters, Jennie Bunch Naifeh and Rebecca Bunch Stem; and one brother, George D. Bunch.
Honoring their grandmother as pallbearers will be Cooper Hurt, Nick Hurt, Conner Hurt, Christopher Payne and Luke Payne; her nephew, Joey Stem; and cousin, Scotty Hayes.
The family asks that memorial contributions be directed to Trimble First Baptist Church Building Fund, P. O. Box 187, Trimble, TN 38259.
