Sue Hatler
Mrs. Sue Carolyn Miller Hatler, 94, of Martin, passed away peacefully on Monday, Nov. 25, 2024. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, at Murphy Funeral Home in Martin, with Bro. John Forgy, Bro. Cory Sawyers and Bro. Sidney White officiating. Burial followed at Hatler’s Chapel Cemetery. Sue was born March 2, 1930, the second of three children of John C. and Sue Cathryn Toland Miller. She was married to James Harold Hatler, who preceded her in death. They had four children, Phillip Roy (Carol) Hatler, Richard Wayne Hatler, Joe Albert (Donna) Hatler and Susan Starr Hatler Meek. There were 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren born into this family. Sue was baptized at the age of 12 at the Church of Christ at Kenton. She was a stay-at-home mom to her four children while also pursuing higher education. She obtained a bachelor’s degree from the University of Tennessee at Martin, and a master’s degree from Murray State University. Sue taught two years at Martin High School. She was an employee of the Tennessee State Department of Corrections for 25 years, working as Juvenile Probation Officer and Director of the Highland Rim School for Girls in Tullahoma. Sue was involved in the Hyndsver Community activities during the 1950s and 1960s. She was a Cub Scout den mother and was involved in Girl Scout activities for 14 years. Sue served with help from Harold as Girl Scout Day Camp Director for five years. She was involved in Band Parents Club, PTA, 4H Club, AAUW, and other civic activities. She was published in the 1965 edition of Outstanding Young Women of America. Sue taught ladies’ bible classes, along with children’s classes and VBS at church. Sue is survived by her sister, Peggy M. Countess; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Jerry C. Miller. The family suggests that any memorials be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
