UC, SF roll to Region 7-1A wins; Rebel stopped by Dresden

Union City 42, Greenfield 9

The Golden Tornadoes rolled to their third Region 7-1A win in as many tries and their fourth straight victory overall with the lopsided verdict at Greenfield on Friday night.

Union City needed just 21 offensive plays, along with a special teams’ score, to put six touchdowns on the board.

Tayehari Jones scored on runs of 42 and two yards as well as a 53-yard punt return, while Jacob Arnold added TD scampers of 13 and 12 yards and Keaten Brown bulled into the end zone from two yards out.

The Twisters spotted Greenfield an early Kinzer Pratt field goal of 28 yards before reeling off 42 straight points. Drake Ricketts scored for the Yellowjackets in the game’s final seconds.

For UC, Marcos Landeros connected on all six of point-after tries.

Greenfield managed just 85 total yards and was pushed back for a minus-42 on 20 rushing attempts.

Union City is now 4-2 overall and 3-0 in the region, while Greenfield falls to 3-3 and 2-2.

This week, Union City will host Dresden in a game that likely will determine the region champion, while Greenfield will be at home against South Fulton in a game that also could play a big role in the playoff race.

South Fulton 54, Gleason 14

The Red Devils broke the game open with four touchdowns in the second quarter to pull away for a huge Region 7-1A win at home Friday night.

South Fulton slammed the door on a three-game losing streak and kept its playoff hopes alive with the blowout verdict.

Dallas Whitehead, who finished with 178 yards rushing on 19 carries, had three of those TDs in the second quarter as he reached the end zone from four, eight and four yards out.

Josh McKnight pulled in a pass over the middle from Brady McFarland for a 33-yard touchdown to cap off the scoring blitz.

South Fulton struck first on a 27-yard run by Whitehead and looked poised to add to that lead when Drake Lehmkuhl grabbed a McFarland pass at the goal line and raced 100 yards the other way for the score. A two-point conversion put the Bulldogs up 8-7 at 4:32 of the first quarter.

That lead last all of 15 seconds as Connor O’Neal brought the ensuing kickoff back 64 yards to set up a seven-yard TD run by McFarland.

The Devil QB ran for two scores and threw for another, completing 11-of-15 passes for 95 yards. McKnight caught eight of those passes for 69 yards.

SF piled up 402 yards of offense while holding the Bulldogs to 124.

At halftime, South Fulton crowned Addysen Wilson as homecoming queen and held a special ceremony to name the press box at Red Devil Stadium the Ted Barclay Press Box in honor of the long-time public address announcer.

SF is now 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the league heading into this Friday’s trip to Greenfield. Gleason is 4-2 and 1-2 with a home game against Lake County up next.

Dresden 28, Obion Central 14

The Lions scored the game’s first three touchdowns and shut out Central until late into the third quarter to take the win over the Class 4A Rebels at Rotary Field in Dresden.

After a scoreless first quarter, Tristan Jett had scoring runs of 25 and six yards, while Nick Turnbow pulled down a 33-yard TD pass from Cameron Schlicht to put Dresden up 21-0.

OC finally scored with just over a minute remaining in the third period on a seven-yard run by Hamilton May. He then added a six-yard TD scamper in at the midway point of the fourth to pull OC within 21-14.

But, Dresden struck last and with just two minutes left on a four-yard run by Schlicht.

Central put up 306 yards of offense, but 148 came on the two scoring drives.

Obion Central, now 4-2 following its second straight loss, is still in the hunt for a home playoff game and will try to take a big step in that direction when the Rebels visit Crockett County this Friday night. Dresden, ranked No. 2 in last week’s Class 1A poll, is 6-0 and visits Union City for a big Region 7-1A game this coming week.
