STEPPING UP

STEPPING UP — Firefighter Lilliana Callens (front) of the Obion Fire Department made her way up another flight of tower stairs Saturday morning during the fifth annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb, hosted by the Union City Fire Department at Discovery Park of America. The first-time climber was joined by Union City Firefighter 1st Class Carrie Dunn, a repeat climber. Not only did 20-year-old Ms. Callens achieve her goal of finishing, she was the first participant to finish and ring the bell to signal completion. The climb invited firefighters and other first responders, while wearing full gear, to climb DPA’s Cooper Tower staircase 10 times, the equivalent of the World Trade Center’s 110 stories, in remembrance of the 343 New York City firefighters who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
