Red Devils, Rebels win again, Twisters lose heartbreaker

South Fulton 40, Fulton County, Ky. 12

The Red Devils had another strong offensive game, scoring 40 points for the second straight week in Friday’s win over their Kentucky visitors at Red Devil Stadium.

SF quarterback Brady McFarland was a dual threat as he completed 10-of-21 passes for 121 yards and a score and ran for 41 yards and another TD.

Dallas Whitehead had a big game carrying the ball, rushing for 168 yards and two TDs on 17 carries.

And, Charlie Mike Mulcahy was good on four of his six extra points.

SF led 7-6 after one quarter, and then put up three scores in the second as McFarland scored on a four-yard run and hit Jonathan Doss with a nine-yard pass. Luke Morris scored on a one-yard burst.

Up 27-6 at intermission, South Fulton widened the gap to 40-6 by the end of the third quarter with two TD runs by Whitehead, covering 10 and 20 yards.

Conner Lawrence had a big game defensively for the Devils with seven tackles, including three for a loss and two sacks, along with a pass break-up.

South Fulton is 2-0 for the first time since 2017.

Obion Central 14, Westview 13

The Rebels did just enough on offense and took advantage of numerous Charger mistakes to earn their second road win in as many weeks.

Tucker Moore’s nine-yard run and follow-up two-point conversion just six seconds into the fourth quarter proved to be the winning edge for Central.

Bryson Underwood made diving interception after Westview had moved to the Rebel 12-yard-line, and then Central never gave the Chargers another chance, running the ball on 12 consecutive plays and getting help from two Westview penalties.

The Chargers were flagged 14 times in the game and also committed four turnovers, including three lost fumbles in the second quarter.

Westview led 7-0 at the half and 13-6 after three quarters, OC’s score coming on a kickoff return by Kweli Purifoy.

It marks the second time in OC head coach Justin Palmer’s three years that the Rebs have started the season 2-0. In 2021, Central got a Covid win over Lake County following a season-opening victory over Gibson County.

USJ 20, Union City 19

Too many miscues proved costly for the Golden Tornadoes as UC dropped its second straight game to open the season.

Union City lost three fumbles, including one with less than a minute to play as it was driving for a potential go-ahead score, and threw an interception while also seeing a touchdown called back on one of its six penalties.

Keaten Brown scored on a pair of four-yard runs, the second giving the Twisters a 19-13 lead with 5:52 to play in the game, while Jacob Arnold had a 20-yard TD run. Arnold also had a 37-yard scoring run in the second quarter called back, and UC fumbled away possession two plays later.

Arnold (160 yards) and Brown (123) both rushed for over 100 yards in the game as UC had 297 yards of total offense, all on the ground.

USJ quarterback Corben Howard completed 9-of-16 passes for 147 yards and a TD with no interceptions. He was 3-of-4 on USJ’s scoring drive in third period and completed all three of his attempts on the Bruins’ two scoring drives in the fourth quarter.

It marks the first time since 2018 that UC has started 0-2. That UC team lost its first three games and four of its first five before finishing 7-6 and reaching the 2A quarterfinals.
