Steve Speed

Steve Speed, 77, of Union City died July 1, 2022, at Vanderbilt Medical Center.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Poplar Grove Cemetery near Hickman, Ky. The Rev. Eddie Mallonee will officiate.
Pallbearers will be Steven Speed, Rodney Speed, Davis Ozier, Allen Ozier, Tom Shaw and Andy Shaw.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. today at White-Ranson Funeral Home.
He was born June 9, 1945, in Union City, son the late Marshall Wright and Lucille (Maynard) Speed. He was co-owner and operator of the former Speed Ag Services. He married the former Betty Shaw. She survives. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Union City.
Steve was a graduate of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in history. While at Knoxville, he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, where he served as vice president. He was the starting first baseman on the UT baseball team. Steve received his Masters in Education from Murray State University.
He coached high school basketball for 15 years and the highlight of his coaching career was carrying both the girls’ and boys’ teams at Trenton Peabody High School to the state tournament.
He was instrumental in creating a youth basketball league in Union City in the mid-1980s known as “Little Twisters” and it continues to this day.
The family requests memorials be sent to: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Little Twister Basketball League in care of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Northwest Tennessee.
In addition to his wife, he is also survived by a daughter, Amy (Doug) Martinek; son, Shaw (Jacenta) Speed; six granddaughters, Marley Speed, Mallorey Speed, Makale Speed, Megan Speed and Morgan Speed, all of Union City, and Caroline Martinek of Knoxville; and a grandson, Ben Martinek of Union City.
He was also preceded in death by his brother, Roger Speed.
