REMEMBERING SOLDIERS

Col. Carl Mills (far left) of Lake County, who served as a chaplain in the military, addressed a crowd of about 50 veterans and their family members at Spicer Park during the annual Memorial Day Celebration in Samburg Saturday afternoon. He quoted Gen. Douglas MacArthur and read the words to “Taps,” which is unique to the United States military, as the call is sounded at funerals, wreath-laying ceremonies and memorial services. Following his remarks, Samburg Police Chief Chris Cummings, who is also a veteran, reminded those in attendance that Memorial Day is a day to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice. To conclude the ceremony, Obion County School System music teacher Ped Foster played “Taps.” The event was sponsored by Samburg Tourism. (See related photo, Page 2)
