Joel Stowers

Joel Adams Stowers, age 87, of Athens, Georgia. died Friday, Jan. 19, 2020. A Celebration of Life Service was presented at Athens First Methodist Church at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22. Interment followed at Coldwater Methodist Church Cemetery, Elberton, Georgia with Lord and Stephen Funeral Home in Athens in charge of the arrangements. Joel graduated from Georgia Teachers College (now Georgia Southern University). He also received a master’s degree from Emory University School of Library Science, and later held the position as Director of the University of Tennessee Library at Martin. After 29 years, he retired in 1999 and moved to Athens. During these years, he has continued to share his love of playing the piano by providing music in churches and nursing homes in the area. He is survived by his wife, Anne Forbus Stowers of Athens; nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Stowers was preceded in death by his parents, Clara Adams and Adlai Stevenson Stowers; and both sisters and both brothers.
