Brandy Spendlove takes over MMS girls’ soccer team

The love of sports lured Brandy Spendlove to becoming the new girls’ soccer head coach at Martin Middle School.

Spendlove replaces Taylor Johnson, who accepted a teaching job at East Elementary School in Humboldt. Spendlove now moves from the Martin Primary School to the middle school, where she will teach sixth-grade English and coach the girls’ soccer team.

The Lady Chargers’ new head coach has been with the Weakley County School system for several years as she got her start in teaching at Greenfield Elementary School.

This is Spendlove’s first gig at coaching soccer, and she has never played the game. However, she has a deep love of sports and her eldest daughter, Chandler, will be a sixth-grader at Martin Middle School when classes begin. Her daughter does not play soccer, but she does plays softball and basketball, and she will be on both middle school teams when those seasons begin.

“I have been teaching for the Weakley County School system for six years,” Spendlove said. “I have always been involved in sports, and I love competition of any kind.”

Spendlove held her first practice Tuesday and she is already learning something about the team.

“This season I have a great group of girls,” Spendlove said. “They are hard workers and great representatives of Martin Middle School. If each practice, or game, we improve, I will be a happy coach.”

Since Spendlove is new to the sport and coaching, it is quite obvious that she has not seen any of the teams she will be going up against. That does not appear to matter to her as she has all the confidence in the world in her team.

“I haven’t seen the competition, but I believe that these girls can do anything they set their minds to,” Spendlove said. “I believe in them. Go Chargers.”

Spendlove is married with two daughters. She is 2004 Westview graduate and a graduate from UT Martin with a degree in education in 2009.

Westview is still without a head coach for the girls’ soccer team and softball squad. However, an announcement about those two vacancies being filled is expected by early next week.
