Gerald Anthony Sumkowski, 76, of Rives passed away 5:36 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, 2019, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Jackson Church of God in Jackson, Mich. Brother Jim Morrison will officiate. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Joshua Thompson, Robert Junior Sumkowski, Steve Sumkowski, Steve Bosco, Doug Lake and Ryan Oakley.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. today at Edmaiston-Mosley Funeral Home.
Another visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday at Desnoyer Funeral Home in Jackson and from noon until the hour of services Saturday at the church.
He was born July 6, 1942, in Jackson, son of the late Anthony and Donna (Vandam) Sumkowski. He married Cheralyn Kay “Shirley” Sumkowski May 19, 1962. She preceded him in death Sept. 1, 2008.
He retired from the former Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company in Jackson and Union City after 38 years of service. He then was a driver for Northwest Tennessee Transit Authority.
He had served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps and participated in taekwondo at Lewis Institute, where he earned the degree of second degree black belt.
He is survived by three daughters, Karen Stough (Dennie) of Union City, Gina Henry (Rick) of Parma, Mich., and Christine Brown (Gene) of Jackson; two sisters, Cheryl Strzyzewski and Jeannie Sumkowski, both of Jackson; two brothers, Denny Sumkowski (Cindy) of Pleasant Lake, Mich., and Ron Sumkowski (Marci) of Napoleon, Mich.; nine grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by one son, Gerald “Jerry” Sumkowski; and one brother, Robert Sumkowski.
