Wendell Gray

Wendell Douglas Gray, 77, of Union City succumbed to cancer on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2019.
A memorial service will be held from noon until 3 p.m. Saturday at Hornbeak City Hall.
Upon death, Wendell’s noble wish was to be donated to the Genesis Legacy Pro-gram for medical study in Memphis.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or The American Cancer Society.
Born March 2, 1941, to parents Ollie and Lubie, he was one of 12 children. He remained close to his brothers and sisters throughout his life.
After serving in the U.S. Army, he moved to Plymouth, Mich., where he became a U.S. postal worker. He transferred back to Union City in 1977, and had a medical retirement in 1993.
Upon retirement, his passions were his grandchildren, singing, poetry, casinos, southern food and trying to find the humorous side of life.
He is survived by his daughter, Kimberly Cruce of Union City; and his son, Brian Douglas Gray and wife, Amy, of Louisville, Ky.; three grandchildren, Rachel Cruce and Maya and Lucy Gray; sisters, Ophelia Speed, Naomi Coley, Virginia Montgomery, Janice Moore and Phyllis Jones; and brothers, Jim and Charles Gray, along with several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by wife, Deborah Ann Gray in 2009; both parents; brothers, Henry, Doyle and Ralph Gray; and sister, Martha Davis.
