Janet Cook Beard

Janet “Diggy” Beard of Union City left this earth on Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2018, while hospitalized in Memphis.
She was 29 years of age or was it 39?
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at White-Ranson Funeral Home, with the Rev. Darrell Hoffman officiating. Burial will follow at Antioch Cemetery near Hornbeak.
The family will receive friends from 9 until the hour of service on Saturday at the funeral home.
The family requests memorials be sent to Rosies Rescue, 1010 State Rt. 22, Tiptonville, TN, 38079.
Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
She was born Sept. 13, 1943, in Cape Girardeau, Mo., to Charles “Bertie” and Frankie “Christine” (Cook) Palmer. She was the 10th child of 13, and the youngest daughter.
She married Edward Hill at a young age, and three children were born from this marriage: Eddie, Pam and Lisa. After a divorce, she married Norman Cook, accepting his five children into her heart: Becky, Cheri, Jeannie, Dawn and Leslie. Norman and Janet raised four boys: Roger, Mark, Chris and Mike. Janet married a third time to Hershel Beard, and she accepted his two sons, also: Donnie and Dale.
She never held high office but was asked to run for mayor several times, though many wonder if it was in jest. She was known to give advice to those who sought her wisdom, and she encouraged and assisted many in receiving their general education diploma.
She gave freely of her time to help rescued puppies and dogs to find their forever homes. Human or animal was treated the same, accepted and assisted as she could, taking them in, providing food and shelter, turning none away. She loved gardening, was an avid reader and enjoyed visiting her favorite casinos.
She was preceded in death by both parents; all three spouses; eight siblings, Anita Lufcy, Junior Palmer, Lucille Pledger, Curt Palmer, Frank Palmer, Shirley Hency, Richard Palmer and Tommy Palmer; one step-son, Donnie Beard; and one grandchild.
She is survived by four siblings, James Palmer of Fruitland, Mo., Marilyn (Bob) Reed of Washington, Ill., Patricia (Frank) Roth of Camarillo, Calif., and David (Kaye) Palmer of Peoria, Ill.; all her children, Edward (Malinda) Hill of McClure, Ill., Pamela (Terry/“Rick”) Roberts of Grand Tower, Ill., Lisa Smith of Jackson, Mo., Roger Cook of Union City, Mark (Jan) Cook of Olive Branch, Miss., and Christopher Cook and Michael Cook, both of Union City; all her step-children, but one; 24 grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, with two more on the way; many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews; and several wonderful friends who will miss her laughter and encouragement.
Condolences may be sent to the family at the funeral home website:
