Jerry Gurien

Visitation will be Thursday, Nov. 10, from noon-2 p.m., with the funeral to follow at White-Ranson Funeral Home, with burial at East View Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Dustin Vernon, Philip Vernon, Ben Meeks, Joe Sergerson, Jeff Campbell, Greg Moore and Oneil Baker.
Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Sergerson, Bob Moffitt and the staff and associates of The Bridge (Signatures) Nursing Home in Ridgely.
The family requests that memorials be made to Chimes for Charity.
Jerry was born on Jan. 13, 1939, in Troy, to the late Carry C. and Irene (Tate) Gurien. He married the former Patsy F. Fitz of Troy Aug. 7, 1957. A native of Troy, he attended Dixie School and graduated from Troy High School.
He was employed by Charles Todd Rental Uniform Co. of St. Louis from 1959-66 and also earned the eminent “Salesman of the Year” award in 1966. Jerry then began Union City Towel and Uniform Co. in 1967 and in 1980, the company became involved in pre-washing denim, thus the inception of Gurien Finishing Corp., which at its peak in the 1990s employed 550 employees at combined operations in three different locations, including Ash-Tex Industries in Hickman, Ky.
A hunter and outdoorsman, he also enjoyed the hobbies of collecting a variety of cars, various type vehicles and equipment; traveling; playing cards; golfing; and spending time with family.
He was a member of Second Baptist Church of Union City and was also a member of Union City Masonic Lodge No. 538 F&AM.
He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army Reserve in 1964.
He served on the advisory board of Reelfoot Bank from 1986-94 and on its board of directors from 1995-2009.
He was a major supporter of Chimes for Charity and was a major anonymous benefactor to his community.
He is survived by his wife, Patsy; two children, Beverly (Larry) Vernon and Greg (Cindy) Gurien, all of Union City; four grandchildren, Dustin (Amanda) Vernon of Cobbtown, Ga., Ashley (Ben) Meeks and Philip Vernon, all of Nashville, and Kesha Gurien of Union City; two great-grandchildren, GraceAnna Vernon and Caelan Vernon, both of Cobbtown; and five sisters, Shirley Moffitt of Troy and Linda Moore, Judy Byars, Reba Armstrong and Bettye Gurien, all of Union City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Mildred Gurien; his grandson, Tyler L. Gurien; and his brother, Billy Gene Gurien.
