Ronald Coleman Shaffer

Ron was preceded in death by his mother, Nica (Sines) Shaffer; his father, Clifton Shaffer; and his stepdaughter, Shelby Lilya.
Ron is survived by his wife, Rita (Nine) Shaffer of Union City; his daughter, Tracey (David) McConnell of Newburgh, Ind.; his stepdaughter Kim (Scott) Dorton of Kingsport; his brother, Bill (Pat) Shaffer; his nephews, Brian Shaffer, Randy Shaffer and Billy Shaffer of Cumberland, Md.; and his grandson, Kade McConnell.
Ron was a 1956 graduate of Fort Hill High School. A football scholarship sent him to the University of Maryland, where he graduated with a degree in engineering. Upon graduation, Ron enrolled as a reservist in the U.S. Marine Corps. He then began working as an industrial engineer at the Kelly Springfield Tire Co. in Cumberland, Md. Twenty-four years later, he moved to Union City, where he continued his career at the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.
In his retirement, Ron was a member of the Master Gardener Club in Union City. He enjoyed spending time outdoors in his garden, woodworking and reading. He was also an avid blood donor.
Ron was a well-respected man who always made himself available to those in need. He was a strong and humble man. Knowing him was an honor. He will be greatly missed.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday at noon (EDT) at the Livingstone Church of the Bretheren in Cumberland.
