Heard Butler

The funeral service will be Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Oxford-University United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Warren Black and Eddie Rester officiating. Burial will follow in Oxford Memorial Cemetery.  
Visitation will be prior to the service, beginning at 3:30 at the church. Waller Funeral Home in Oxford is in charge of arrangements.
Born in Memphis to the late Hiram William and Heard (Lawrence) Wylie, Ms. Butler was a longtime member of Oxford-University United Methodist Church, where she was an active member of the choir and taught Sunday school. In addition, she was involved in the Wesley Foundation.
After raising her family, her love of learning led her to earn her master’s degree in history and English from Ole Miss. She especially enjoyed the historical aspects of early Christianity and taught Greek and Latin for several years at the University of Mississippi and then Latin at Oxford-University School.  
In addition to spending time with her family, Ms. Butler enjoyed traveling and studying abroad.
Survivors, in addition to her daughter, Heard (Butler) Critchlow and her husband, David, of Union City, include two sons, Robert A. Butler III and his wife, Laura, of Haslet, Texas, and William Butler and his wife, Icela, of Huntsville, Ala.; her former husband, Robert Butler Jr. of Oxford; her sister, D.B. King of Oxford; and 11 grandchildren, Mary Lawrence Critchlow, Millie Critchlow, Robbie Butler, Oksana Butler, Natasha Butler, Carolyn Butler, Vova Butler, Vitali Butler, Lera Butler, Rachel Lynn Butler and David Wylie Butler; and four great-grandchildren, Kylie, Shiloh, Abigail and Nikolai.
