James Newsom

Funeral services for Mr. Newsom will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday  at Strong Funeral Home in Hickman, with the Rev. Henry Callison officiating. Burial with military rites will follow in the Hickman City Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at Strong Funeral Home this evening from 6-8 p.m. and again on Wednesday at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until service time.
James is survived by his sons, Bret Johnson of Hickman and Ricky Newsom and Kevin Newsom, both of Dyersburg; his daughter, Tonna Miller of Union City; four brothers, Frank “Bubba” Newsom of Union City, Gilbert Newsom of Hornbeak and Johnny Newsom and Jerry Newsom, both of Memphis; three sisters, Betty Hamil and Mattie Gibson, both of Hickman, and Lena Lavake of Arlington, Texas; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was born Oct. 13, 1944, in Phillippy to the late Rudolph “Red” Newsom and the late Callie (Waynick) Newsom. In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth “Betty Ruth” (O’Connor) Newsom and a great-grandchild.
James was retired from the maintenance department of the former Goodyear Tire & Rubber plant in Union City. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the Vietnam conflict, and was of the Baptist faith.
