Ila Garrigus

Services were Saturday at 4 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home in Wingo, Ky., with Bobby Crittendon officiating. Burial followed in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Charles Russell, Ped Foster, Craig Russell, Caleb Russell, Garrett Foster and Gabe Willett.
The family requests that memorials be made to Mt. Pleasant Cemetery Fund, in care of Laura Davis at 9584 Fields Road, South Fulton, TN 38257.
She was born Dec. 23, 1913, in Weakley County near Palmersville, daughter of the late Robert Bedford and Laura Mae (Butler) Garrigus.
She attended grammar school at the former French School, which was a one-room school. She attended grades seven through 12 at the former Pilot Oak High School, where she graduated in 1932. She graduated from the former Murray State Teachers College in 1942, after stopping for 7 1/2 years to teach at the Pilot Oak School for grades three and four. During World War II, she moved to Detroit to work in a military aircraft engine factory, testing aircraft engines.
In 1946, she taught school in Paducah, Ky., for two years at the former McKinley Grammar School.
She moved to Peoria, Ill., in 1948, and taught at the Columbia, Loucks and Tyng schools, until her retirement in 1976.
She moved back to Lone Oak, Ky., that year and worshipped at Lone Oak Church of Christ, where she was active in the Senior Ladies Group.
Miss Garrigus moved from Lone Oak to live in the home of her nephew and his wife, Larry and Joyce Russell of Union City, in July 2006. She attended Exchange Street Church of Christ when she could, until her health declined, which placed her in Golden Living Center, where she resided until her death.
She is also survived by two other nephews, Denton Russell of Searcy, Ark.; and James Dennis Garrigus of Lone Oak; and three nieces, Laura Fae Davis of South Fulton, Linda Sue Holman of Wingo, Ky., and Patricia Hall of Palm Bay, Fla.
She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Grace Russell and Fannie Garrigus; two brothers, James Garrigus and Vodie Garrigus; and her niece, Bonnie Willett.
