John Burrell

Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at White-Ranson Funeral Home, with Dr. Bobby Williams officiating, assisted by the Rev. Tony Smith. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Barron, Jason Morris, Bobby Hall, Dewayne Hutchens, Kenneth Cleek, Terry Roberts and Mike Muse. Burial will follow in East View Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home 5-8 p.m. Saturday.
He was born Feb. 24, 1928, in Kosciusko, Miss., son of the late Ida Lee (Bearman) and John Nathan Burrell Sr. He married the former Hazel Inez Ragsdale Sept. 29, 1952. She died May 31, 2003. He married the former Peggie Juanita Chapin Long Sept. 11, 2009. She survives. He had owned the former John’s Welding Shop in Union City and the former Little Dixie restaurant and had many rental properties in the city.
He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who served during the Korean War and was a member of Mt. Ararat Cumberland Presbyterian Church near Troy, where he had the longest record of service for an elder, with more than 50 years.
He is also survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Tammie and George Edwards of Union City; two sons and daughters-in-law, Johnny and Jeannette Burrell of Union City and James Edward and Gayle Smith of Greenville, Miss.; his stepdaughter and son-in-law, Yvonne and Herschel McCant of Union City; his stepson and daughter-in-law, Tom and Wilma Long of Weakley County; six grandchildren and the spouse of one, Aby and Jason Morris, Melissa Garner and Taylor Edwards, all of Union City, Matt Oliver of Murray, Ky., and Chris Smith and Marie (Smith) Harmon, both of Greenville; five great-grandchildren; and his brother, Doug Burrell of Indianola, Miss.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
