Sanford “Sandy” Truitt

Sanford “Sandy” M. Truitt, DDS, died Saturday, June 29, 2013 at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville.
Services were held at 11 a.m. today (Tuesday) at First United Methodist Church in Martin with Rev. Randy Cooper officiating. Burial was in East Side Cemetery in Martin with Murphy Funeral Home of Martin in charge of the arrangements.
Bob Peeler, Phil Carr, Dale Overton, Grover Page, G. T. Hall, Johnny Reynolds, Bob Carroll, Clyde Miles, Bubba Vickers, John McDonald and John Curry served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Persimmon Hills Golf Associates and E. W. James Coffee Drinkers.
Truitt was born March 1, 1930 in Colinga, Calif., son of the late Twain George and Grace Rosson Truitt. He was a graduate of Central High School in Memphis, was a United States Army veteran and a graduate of University of Tennessee School of Dentistry. Truitt was a retired dentist and operated the family dental practice in Martin from 1958 until December 1997 for 39 ½ years. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and a member of several clubs as well as a commissioner of Martin Housing for 21 years. His grandmother, Paulina McKinley Truitt, was an artist and a relative of U. S. President William McKinley. She lived in Gustine, Calif. until her death.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Peggy Wood Truitt of Martin; one son, Mark Truitt of Joelton; two daughters, Teresa (Melvin) Weidner of Buchanan and Kami (Mark) Carson of Pleasantview; and one grandchild, Cameron Truitt Carson; two cousins, Pat King and Beau McBride, both of Gustine, Calif.
Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church Building Fund or the charity of the donor’s choice.
