| By KEVIN BOWDEN Staff Reporter The polls in Obion County are going to be a busy place come Nov. 6. That’s the date Obion County and the rest of the nation will be voting in the presidential election. But it’s also the date Obion Countians will go to the polls for local elections in Union City, Samburg, Hornbeak, Woodland Mills, Troy, Obion and South Fulton. The election of most county officials and members of the county commission doesn’t come around until 2014, according to an official with the Obion County Election Commission. The only exception is the office of assessor of property, which comes up for election in August, according to Leigh Schlager, administrator of the Obion County Election Commission. In Union City, voters will consider who will serve as city judge as well as the city council representatives from Ward 2, Ward 3, Ward 5 and an at-large seat. There will also be both at-large seats and the representatives from Ward 2 and Ward 4 on the Union City School Board that will be decided in the November election. Allen Nohsey currently serves as city judge, Billy Jack Cranford represents Ward 2, Dianne Eskew represents Ward 3, Johnny Bacon represents Ward 5 and Bill “Rat” Harrison holds the at-large seat on the council that will come up for election this fall. On the Union City School Board, Dr. Wright Jernigan and the recently-appointed Wesley Conley are the at-large representatives, Karl Ulrich represents Ward 2 and Cathy Waggoner represents Ward 4 on the school board. Hornbeak voters will go the polls to choose a mayor and all seven aldermen in the Nov. 6 election. Currently representing Hornbeak are Mayor George “Pete” Burpo, vice mayor Dennis Dozier and aldermen Lynn Finch, Christina Gray, Debi Jerden, Paul Truett, Cody Caksackkar and Leon Walden. In Samburg, terms are staggered for the mayor and board of aldermen. Voters there will be voting for a new mayor, as current Mayor Larry Gene Davis has indicated he doesn’t plan to run for re-election. Also up for consideration will be three seats on the city board, which are currently being held by Sharon Cunningham, Johnie Johnson and Shelly Arnett. In Woodland Mills, the mayor’s position and one seat on the board of aldermen will be up for election in the fall. Currently serving are Mayor Wade Carrington and aldermen Waymon Reagan and Tom Menees, with the seat held by Reagan due for election in the fall and the seat held by Menees due for election in 2014. In Troy, all five members of the mayor and board of aldermen are up for election this fall. Currently serving are Mayor Jimmie Hart and aldermen Deanna Chappell, Billy Gurien Sr., Hoyt Sampson, Lew Solomon and Ralph Wheatley. In Obion, voters there will consider the mayor’s position and all six councilmen. Currently serving is Mayor Glen Parnell and aldermen Robert Anderson, Patsy Barker, James Depriest, Polk Glover, Mike Miller and Renee Webber. At the north end of the county, South Fulton voters will consider the positions of mayor and two of the four city commissioners. South Fulton Mayor David Crocker, Ward 1 commissioner Charles Moody’s seat and Ward 4 commissioner Jeff Vowell’s seat will all be on the ballot. There will be no elections this fall in Rives and Kenton. The qualifying deadline for all local elections is Aug. 16 at noon, according to Mrs. Schlager. Published in The Messenger 6.12.12 | | | | |
