At the informal city board meeting, Mayor Brundige asked the board to reconsider the current plans for the concretion of the entirety of Festival Park. He said, “I would like to d

iscuss an item that we passed last month (regarding) the concrete at the park. I would like the board to reconsider the smaller version that we had drawn up at first, that would go out toward the splash pad and not cover the whole area to leave some green space. We bid it, and we can restructure the bid as we have from time to time. If that is agreeable to the board, we will put it up for the next meeting.” The board agreed unanimously to reconsider the plans and it was placed on the agenda for the formal meeting that will take place June 13 at 5:15 p.m. As always, citizens are invited to attend.

Other items placed on the agenda include a complete reading of an ordinance that discusses the fiscal year budget from July 2022 to June 2023. Brundige said, “There is no property tax increase in this budget, no increase in water and sewer rates, and very little increase – maybe 50 cents – in the garbage rate. The new company will be taking over July 1. Property taxes will be $1.7544 per $100 assessed value, which is the same as it was last year.” The first reading of this ordinance will happen Monday with the final reading June 30 during a public hearing at the Martin Municipal Complex.

In other news, Parks and Rec Director Brian Moore is excited about the upcoming fishing derby June 11 and anticipates a good turn out. Additionally, library director Katie Parr reported a successful Family Trivia Night with about 10 teams and an impressive 400+ participants at the Kid and Baby Expo the previous weekend.

Joyce Washington was in attendance as well and introduced pastor Nelson Youngblood of Refreshing Church, located at 243 S. Lindell next to and Shelter Insurance. He said, “We have a community minded church and are here to serve, so if there is anything we can do please let us know.” Washington said the church plans to do a “community feed” July 23 at Weldon Park behind the post office. This year’s goal is to meet and feed 200 people hamburgers and hot dogs.

I like all the grass at Festival Park. It’s much more pleasing than looking at a lot of concrete.

I agree, the grass is more cozy and pleasant to look at. Is there plans to utilize the Splash Pad as intended? It’s a shame to not have areas fun to cool off in such a family oriented town.

Was Astroturf ever one of the things that you thought about instead of the concrete since it would be so hot in the summer

I like the grass at Festival Park.. and it would be a more pleasant site to see then just concrete. Why is the Splash Pad not working? Keep the grass.
