Ms. Bowers was born in Rives March 4, 1923. She graduated from the former Sylvan Shade High School near Hickman, Ky. Ms. Bowers worked for the Tennessee Department of Human Services for 47.5 years and at the time of her retirement served as Obion County director. An active member of Union City Cumberland Presbyterian Church for over 60 years, Ms. Bowers was active in the church choir, the Cumberland Presbyterian Women’s Ministry, which she served as secretary-treasurer, and the nursing home ministry. Because of the nursing home ministry, Ms. Bowers was well known by the residents and staff of the Golden Living nursing home, for whom she played the piano and provided the accompaniment for holiday sing-a-longs.
In earlier years, Ms. Bowers was a great favorite of the children of the church, with whom she worked at night. Ms. Bowers’ regard for her family was also reflected in her annual organization in May of Decoration Day for the Stovall Cemetery, where her parents are buried.
Ms. Bowers’ musical talents and sweet nature were enjoyed by her family and friends, and she will be missed.
She leaves a sister, Emily Jackson; two nieces, Mary Jo Overton and Suzanne (Jackson) Overton; her nephew and his wife, Rod and Lynne Jordan Bowers; three great-nieces, Vicky Long and husband Terry Long, Dana Ledney and husband Michael Ledney and Kendall Overton; two great-nephews, Kevin Bowers and Trevor Overton; two great-great-nephews, Matthew Long and wife Shelly Long and Josh Long; her great-great-great-niece, Kailey Long; her great-great-great nephew, Colin Long; and cousins Ernie Ward and his sister, Rita, and others in Tennessee and Kentucky.
In addition to her parents, Ms. Bowers was preceded in death by her sister Laverne (Bowers) Price Caldwell; and her brother and sister-in-law, Max L. and Lenora Bowers.
