Sonny Hutchens

Services were set for 1 p.m. today at White-Ranson Funeral Home, with the Rev. Eddie Mallonee officiating, assisted by the Rev. Jerry Leggett. Burial was to follow in Mount Ararat Cemetery near Troy.
Pallbearers were to be Sam Stephens, Henry Inman, Jerry Cole, Royce Morgan, Richard Arnold, Danny Brann and Jimmy Temple. Honorary pallbearers were to be Brad Ward, Allen Searcy, Barry Keathley and Brian Keathley.
The family requests that memorials be made to the National Kidney Foundation.
He was born June 28, 1941, in Portageville, Mo., son of the late Frankie Eugene and Lois Modeen (Fields) Hutchens. He married the former Carolyn Faye Hammonds Sept. 24, 1962. She survives. He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee at Martin, with a major in criminal justice, and had been a Union City police officer from 1969-73, becoming chief in 1973. He remained in that position until 1984. He then served as Union City building codes director from 1984-2007. He was also president of the Builders Code Directors Association in 2003-04. A U.S. Army veteran, he served three years in Germany. He was also a member of the Tennessee National Guard, retiring in 1984, and attained the rank of master sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserves for 28 years of service, retiring in 2000.
He was a member of Union City Second Baptist Church, where he was a trustee and was a deacon who also served several terms as chairman of the deacons. He was a graduate of Leadership Obion County, a Mason and a member of Union City Civitan Club, where he had served as president and as lieutenant governor for Area 13 from 1989-90.
He is also survived by two sons, Kelly Hutchens of Union City and Special Agent Stacy Hutchens of Norfolk, Va.; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Dwayne and Linda Hutchens, Ronnie Hutchens and Gary and Mary Kay Hutchens, all of Union City; his sister-in-law and her husband, Mary Joyce and Brad Ward of Union City; five nephews; and his niece.
