Mary Jane Thornton

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at  White-Ranson Funeral Home, with the Rev. Tim Atkins officiating and the Rev. Jim Calhoun assisting. Burial will follow in Obion County Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from noon until the hour of services Tuesday.
Pallbearers will be Dr. Bob Sanner, Charlie Richards, William Crouch, Bill Townes, Rob Joyner, Scott Thompson and Bill Thompson. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Margaret Carter Sunday School Class.
The family requests that memorials be made to Wags and Whiskers, P.O. Box 472, Union City, TN 38281; or Union City First United Methodist Church.
She was born July 17, 1924, in Memphis, daughter of the late Darrell Dickens and Annie (Simmons) Waddell. She married Robert Lee Thornton Jr. June 12, 1942. He died July 13, 1990. She had been employed at the former Brown Shoe Co. in Union City for many years and was a member of Union City First United Methodist Church for more than 60 years. She was also a member of the Margaret Carter Sunday School Class there. Mrs. Thornton was a life master duplicate bridge player.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Rosalee and James W. “Jim” Thompson of Union City; two grandsons and their wives, Scott Wilson and Sharon (Poel) Thompson of Washington, D.C., and William Thornton “Bill” and Felicia (Rich) Thompson of Knoxville; three granddaughters, twins Madison Rich Thompson and Reagan Lee Thompson and Sophie Jean Thompson, all of Knoxville; and her cousin, Dr. Eric W. Naylor of Sewanee and Union City.
She was preceded in death by her twin sister, Annie (Waddell) Beasley; and twin brothers, Joel B. Waddell and Dr. Henry T. Waddell.
