A Union City man was arrested on a theft charge Thursday afternoon following two separate incidents that occurred within minutes of one another.
Jerry L. Sanders, 52, of 788 West Highway 22, Union City, was arrested at 3:58 p.m. on a charge of theft of services, according to a Union City Police Department report.
Police had responded to Spot Free Car Wash at 1201 South Ury St., where owner Don Bailey reported an incident that allegedly happened a few minutes earlier. Bailey said he had been told by Sanders that he had placed two $5 bills into a machine that changes paper money for quarters, but he opened the machine and there were no $5 bills inside. Police reported it appeared Sanders had attempted to obtain cash by making the claim.
Police said Sanders did not qualify for a misdemeanor citation because he had been connected to another alleged crime involving theft a few minutes earlier at Lighthouse Christian Bookstore, also run by Bailey.
According to the police report, Bailey told police Sanders had also been at his bookstore at 510 South First St. in downtown Union City a few minutes earlier and had been observed allegedly concealing an electronic Bible under his shirt. He was stopped by store employees, though, and the item was recovered. He also allegedly had in his possession a necklace from which the price tag had been removed.
Sanders was taken to the Obion County Law Enforcement Complex.
