Dresden girls keep 13A crown Posted: Thursday, February 7, 2013 12:00 pm It is back-to-back regular season District 13A championships for the Dresden girls after a 63-9 blowout win over Carroll Academy Tuesday night. The Lady Lions finish the regular season with a 14-2 district record and will host a quarterfinal game in the district tournament. Gleason’s girls ended a three-game skid on Tuesday with a 54-29 district win over McKenzie. The Lady Bulldogs finish the regular season in third place with a 13-3 District 13A record and will also host a quarterfinal game in the district tournament as the No. 3 seed. Dresden boys ended the regular season on a positive note with a 72-46 win over Carroll Academy on Tuesday. The win gives the Lions the No. 3 seed in the district with a 13-3 record. Gleason was swept by South Fulton on Monday, losing 49-36 in the girls’ game and 76-36 in boys’ action. The Bulldogs lost their eighth consecutive game Tueday, 70-22 to McKenzie, to finish the regular season with a 2-15 district record and 2-21 overall. GIRLS Dresden 63, CA 9 The Lady Lions got 20 points from Jessica Davis to secure the No. 1 seed in the District 13A tournament. Dresden held Carroll Academy scoreless in the first period and went on to lead 41-2 at the half and 56-7 at the end of three periods. Haley Browning and Kayla Hayes both scored 10 points, while Alexis Osteen tossed in seven. The Lady Lions finish the regular season with a 19-5 overall record. The only two district losses were to West Carroll and Gleason. Gleason 54, McKenzie 29 If any team needed a win to close out the season heading into the district tournament, it was the Lady Bulldog squad. Briana Jones gave Gleason a huge lift with her game-high 25 points while also pulling down five rebounds and grabbing five steals on Tuesday. Emily Bell scored 11 points and had five offensive rebounds to help out Jones on the night. Autumn Faulkner tossed in nine points and dished out six assists. BOYS Dresden 72, CA 46 First-period struggles appear to be the norm for the Lions (15-8) as of late, and they continued that trend against Carroll Academy on Tuesday. Both teams fought to a 13-all tie after one period of play, and then the Lions busted loose for 26 in the second period and led 39-23 at the half. The 26-point second period was not enough for the Lions as they poured in 30 points in the third period to lead 69-31. Austin Maxey and Kourtney Sawyer led the Lions with 17 points, while Austin Daniel scored 13 and Kaleb Houston added 11. Elijah Melton scored a game-high 20 points for Carroll Academy. McKenzie 70, Gleason 22 The Bulldogs fell to 2-14 for the season, while McKenzie won the regular season district title in the process Tuesday night. The Bulldogs never were able to get anything going against the Rebels and were held to single-digit scoring in each of the four quuarters. The Rebels led 29-4 after one, 57-13 at the half and 63-17 at the end of three periods. Austin Perry led the Bulldogs once again in scoring with 13 points.
