OFFICERS ELECTED — Posted: Wednesday, February 6, 2013 6:00 pm OFFICERS ELECTED — The University of Tennessee at Martin Chapter of the Student Members of the American Chemical Society (SMACS) recently elected officers for the 2013 year. Among them were (from left, seated) Heather M. Vacovsky of Hillsboro, secretary; Elizabeth A. DeVlieger of Portland, president; Chelsea N. Peeler of Paris, vice president; Saumil V. Patel of Martin, treasurer; (stand) additional executive committee members Priya J. Patel of Savannah, Sarah E. Maxey of Ashland City and Meagan N. Eason of Union City. Not pictured is executive committee member Heather Streckert of Dyersburg. UT Martin SMACS leads the nation in the number of outstanding ratings and innovative activity grants won from the American Chemical Society Committee on Chemical Education and in the number of Green Chapter awards from the ACS Green Chemistry Institute. Recently, the chapter organized a science discovery activities program for Girl Scouts in Union City, conducted a tour of the biodiesel plant in Memphis, hosted a National Chemistry Week program for the local Kentucky Lake Section of ACS, presented chemistry demonstrations for Dresden Junior High School and sponsored two seminars. The chapter plans to organize a chemistry merit badge clinic for Boy Scouts, co-host an Area Collegiate Chemistry Meeting at Murray (Ky.)
