Lady Panthers reach sectional semifinal round

Martin Middle School’s boys will be watching the West Tennessee Sectionals from the stands while the girls will continue playing on.
Corry Middle School ended the Panthers season on Saturday with a 52-43 first-round verdict.
Martin got to the sectionals by being the runner-up in the Area 5 tournament finals on Thursday. South Fulton beat Martin 46-30 to win the Area 5 tournament.
Martin ends its season with an 11-9 record.
The Lady Panthers beat Union City 44-25 thanks to a 15-point run in the first half to advance to Wednesday’s semifinal game.
The Lady Panthers (14-5) got into the sectional by winning the girls’ championship game of the Area 5 tourney on Thursday, beating Paris Inman 37-20.
Martin 44, UC 25 (G)
Tasia Jones sparked a turnaround for the Lady Panthers with two steals that she turned into four fast-break points after UC attempted to dictate the tempo with a an aggressive defense.
UC (11-8) grabbed an early 5-2, lead, but a Mary Tucker bucket was followed by the pair of steals by Jones and the Lady Panthers took off from there.
Martin scored the last nine points of the first quarter and the first six markers of the second, Charlyce Davis and Heidi Craddock each hitting a triple to cap off the 15-point run.
Martin led 27-13 at the half and increased its lead to 16 on a 3-pointer by Tucker to close out the third period.
Jones and Craddock led Martin with nine points each. Jordyn Greene scored eight followed by Tucker with seven.
Martin 37, Inman 20 (G)
The Lady Panthers held the Lady Bulldogs to a single point in the first period for a 10-1 in cruising to the area crown.
Lydia Pritchett led the Lady Panthers in scoring with a game-high 13 points. Jones scored seven and had one 3-pointer. Davis tossed in six and Allie Cantrell added five.
Martin kept Inman in check with only three players scoring baskets.
The Lady Panthers led 19-12 at the end of the first half and 24-16 after three periods of play.
Corry 52, Martin 43 (B)
A horrendous first half for Martin combined with five first-period triples by Corry resulted in a deep hole for the Panthers.
Martin took an early 5-3 lead on a Matt McMillan 3-pointer, then Corry made three triples out of its next five baskets to take command of the first period. Corry ended the first period the way it started it — on a 3-pointer to lead 21-10.
The second period was even worse for the Panthers as they managed only four points on the scoreboard. Martin’s first points in the period came with 1:21 left on the clock after Corry went on a 14-point run.
Martin nipped and tugged to get Corry’s lead down to 17 at the end of the third period. Ty Kelly scored seven of his 13 points in the period for Martin.
Corry went to its bench with a 19-point lead with 4:40 to play in the game. McMillan got hot with the shooting as he hit three triples and the Panthers went on a 13-point run, but ran out of time as did their season.
McMillan led the Panthers with 15 points. Cameron Jones and Ryan Sams each scored four points for Martin.
SF 46, Martin 30 (B)
The Panthers had SF dangling on the ropes in the first period of the Area 5 championship game on Thursday with 12-2 lead before SF erupted with a 17-6 second period.
Martin retook the lead on a Sams 3-pointer with 2:24 to play in the third to make it a 24-22 game. Martin made a mistake when Sams fouled Tyriq Jones on a 3-point attempt as the buzzer sounded to end the third period. Jones made all three shots to give SF a 29-26 lead.
Sams made another mental mistake with less than four minutes to play and Martin down 33-30.
Kody Davidson was fouled by Sam on a 3-point shot and made the free throw.
SF went on a 13-point run from there.
Tyler Hopper led Martin with 12 points. McMillan finished with eight and Kelly scored five.
