Sports Briefs Posted: Friday, February 1, 2013 12:00 pm Cal Ripkin sign-ups slated in Dresden Dresden Cal Ripken and Junior Babe Ruth Baseball will hold its registration period Feb. 4-23. Registration forms are sent home with Dresden Elementary and Dresden Middle School students. These forms, along with registration fees, may be returned to school. On Feb. 16 and 23, there will be registration tables set up in the lobby of Dresden Middle School from 10 a.m.-noon. Feb. 23 will be the last day to register. Forms may also be downloaded from the City of Dresden’s website: www.cityofdresden.com. Age categories for Cal Ripken are 7-8, 9-10, and 11-12 with age to be determined by May 1, 2013. Travel baseball team looks to add players The 14-year-old travel team 9 Strong Baseball is looking to add one to two players to its 2013 roster. The season will not start until after high school baseball is over. Potential players canot turn 15 before May 1 of this year to participate. Skyhawk riders split over weekend The UT Martin equestrian team opened the new year with a win and a loss. The Skyhawks won all four Most Outstanding Performances (MOP) and dominated Delaware State, 15-5, Friday. However, visiting Oklahoma State turned back the Skyhawks, 16-4, Saturday. The Skyhawks won the Hunter Seat competition against Delaware State, 6-4, winning the Equitation on the Flat, 4-1, and suffering a 3-2 setback in Equitation over Fences. Kara Bergenty, Hunter Ralston, Reid Rickett and Mykaela Van Selus won their points in Equitation on the Flat. Bergenty claimed the MOP in Equitation over Fences while Nora Wilson scored the other point for the Skyhawks. The Skyhawks swept the Western competition by claiming the Horsemanship, 5-0, and the Reining, 4-1. Kathryn Gorsuch won the MOP in both Horsemanship and Reining. Candice Fulcher, Amy Guenther, Michelle Chulock and Laurel Elzey won points in the Horsemanship. UT Martin shooters put up record scores The UT Martin rifle teams concluded a successful weekend as they hosted the UT Martin Invitational before racking up the second-highest aggregate score in program history at Murray State on Sunday. In the UT Martin Invitational, the Skyhawk mixed team finished just one point shy of taking home the team smallbore title, compiling 2,277 points. UT Martin’s mixed squad also finished in second in the air rifle competition — piling up 2,301 points — while the Skyhawk women’s team placed third in both the smallbore (2,164) and air rifle (2,242) competitions. At Murray State on Sunday, the UTM mixed team pieced together 2,316 air rifle points to go along with 2,274 smallbore points for an aggregate score of 4,590 – falling just shy of the school record of 4,601 set at Memphis.
