READ ALL ABOUT IT
Union City Elementary School teacher Debra Lawrence enthusiastically read aloud this morning to students in her English as a second language class. She recently developed a blog as part of a literacy project within the reading specialist program for educators at the University of Tennessee at Martin. Teachers working to obtain their Reading Specialist K-12 endorsement in the program were assigned a blogging project where they recorded the progress of their individual reading projects with students. Ms. Lawrence’s project involved reading aloud to students and presenting read-aloud research to colleagues. She said objectives of the project were to enhance teacher motivation, appreciation and utilization of read-aloud strategies for instructional purposes and to increase student interest, knowledge and appreciation for reading. She had 10 teacher participants from kindergarten through third grade and worked with individual teachers in book selections, then developed a read-aloud lesson plan for each teacher. The teachers implemented Ms. Lawrence’s read-aloud lessons with their students and rated their experiences. Eighty percent strongly agreed students showed a positive response to the read-aloud lesson.
