Locals take step up in district standings

Things are heating up with a little more than a week remaining in the regular season for area basketball teams.
Gleason, Dresden and Greenfield all picked up girls’ district wins late last week. In boys’ play, Greenfield and Dresden also got district wins while Gleason took the lone loss.
On Monday, Westview’s teams bounced back with District 13AA wins at Dyersburg — 51-47 in the girls’ game and 82-63 in boys’ action.
Three Gleason (17-4, 11-1) players scored in double figures in the Lady Bulldogs 51-34 win over West Carroll, with Briana Jones leading Gleason with 20 points.
The Lady Lions (16-4, 11-2) had very little problem beating Carroll Academy 76-21 as every Lady Lion scored in the win. Dresden and Gleason will meet tonight in Dresden in a game for first place in District 13A.
The Lady Yellowjackets (13-7, 8-4) held on to defeat Halls 48-42 behind Brittany Peoples’ game-high 16 points.
The Yellowjackets (14-6, 9-3) won a squeaker over Halls on Friday by the score of 68-67 in a high scoring fourth period. Greenfield will play host to Humboldt with the girls’ tip-off scheduled at 6:30.
The Lions (12-7, 9-4) had to overcome a low scoring first period to take out Carroll Academy 59-19. The Lions only scored four points in the first period before stringing together three strong periods.
Scoring is still a problem for the Bulldogs (2-19, 2-10) as they lost to West Carroll 77-41.
GIRLS
Gleason 51, WC 34
Calay Smith, Kim Quick and Jones all reached double figures in scoring as the Lady Bulldogs just keep finding ways to win.
Smith scored 14 points for Gleason while Quick added 11. Jones grabbed 12 rebounds to give her a double-double for the game.
Jaclyn Montgomery was held scoreless but led in assists with eight. Emily Bell had a productive game with four points, four rebounds and four assists.
Gleason shot 58 percent from the while limiting West Carroll to just 39 percent.
Dresden 76, Carroll Aca. 21
All 12 players on the Dresden roster put points on the scoreboard Thursday night with Hailey Browning, Jessica Davis and Kayla Hayes each leading the Lady Lions with 10 points.
This game was decided after one period of play with the Lady Lions outscoring CA 28-0.
Dresden led 37-13 at the half and 65-18 at the end of three after putting 28 points on the scoreboard in the third period.
Alexis Osteen and Alex Dunn each scored eight points for Dresden.
Greenfield 48, Halls 42
Peoples scored nine of her 16 points in the final period Friday night at Halls as the Lady ’Jackets picked up a big District 14A win.
Kaylee Kesterson netted five of her 12 points in the final period as Greenfield outscored the Lady Tigers 19-15 in the fourth period.
Halls led 11-10 at the end of the first period and Greenfield took a 21-17 lead going in at the half.
The Lady ’Jackets held a slim 29-27 lead at the end of the third period.
Aubrey Riggs matched Kesterson in points with 12 while Ashton Pence added six. Allee Dees and Chasity McMullen each scored one point.
BOYS
Greenfield 68, Halls 67
The Yellowjackets held off a fourth period charge by the Tigers in a high-scoring final frame.
Greenfield ended the third period with a 46-41 lead when both teams erupted in the final period.
The ’Jackets had just enough of a lead entering the final period as Halls outscored Greenfield 26-22 in the fourth.
Zac Grooms scored all eight of his points in the fourth periods with six coming off of a pair of 3-pointers.
Miles Cavitt scored six of his 11 points in the fourth to help the ’Jackets fend off the Tigers.
Hunter Crouse led Greenfield with 16 points with Jeremy Lannom scoring 13 and Tony Robinson adding 11.
Dresden 59, Carroll Aca. 19
A low scoring first period turned into a blowout for the Lions on Thursday.
Dresden could only manage to put four points on the scoreboard in the first period, but scored 23 in the second and 16 in both the third and fourth periods.
Eleven of Dresden’s 13 players scored with Austin Maxey leading with nine points.
Austin Daniel netted eight points while Kaleb Houston and Devan Raymer scored six points each.
WC 77, Gleason 41
The Bulldogs started out slowly, picked up some steam and then cooled off against the War Eagles on Thursday.
WC led 14-4 after the first period and then the Bulldogs got back into the game by the end of the half just being down 26-21.
WC took matters into its own hands in the third period and outscored the Bulldogs 29-13 and finished of Gleason with a 22-7 fourth period.
Austin Perry posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Alex Hahn led Gleason in scoring with 13 points. Keaton Collins added five and Chris Sumner scored four.
MONDAY’S GAMES
WV 51, Dyersburg 47 (G)
The Lady Chargers had three players in double figures, led by Teddy Vincent’s 15 points.
Tiffany Rechis added 14, and Kaley Leyhue scored 10 points, all three players hitting a pair of 3-pointers for Westview.
The Chargers led 17-10 after one period, 30-22 at the half and 40-30 after three frames.
Chari Swift led three Lady Trojans’ players in double figures with 18 points.
Christina Moore added 12 points, and Myah Taylor scored 11 for Dyersburg.
WV 82, Dyersburg 63 (B)
Javier Gordon’s double-double of 23 points and 14 rebounds led the Chargers to a big 13AA road win.
Antonio Hogard added 16 points, Jordan Davis scored 12 and Tyquis Johnson pitched in 10 points for Westview.
The Chargers jumped out to a 20-8 lead after one period and never looked back, up 39-28 at the half and 60-48 at the end of three quarters.
Jay Howard had 18 points and Brice Williams added 17 for D’burg. Published in The WCP 1.29.13
