Milan can’t slow down surging Westview squads

It seems like the only way Westview girls can get beat is if they beat themselves — and that’s not happening.
The Class 2A second-ranked Lady Chargers won for the 20th time in 22 games this season on Tuesday and remained unbeaten in District 13AA by downing Milan 67-24. Westview is now 12-0 in the district.
The Gleason girls remained a half game ahead of Dresden in District 13A after the Lady Bulldogs beat Big Sandy 46-35. Gleason is 16-4 on the season and 10-1 in the district.
Westview boys remained in the hunt for the district title with a 76-51 win over Milan and Gleason fell on hard times at Big Sandy with a 67-47 defeat.
Westview is 18-5 overall and 10-2 in the district. Gleason falls to 2-9 in the district and 2-15 overall.
Both Westview teams will have a tough task on Friday as the teams will be at Covington. The Covington girls are ranked No. 5 in the state and the boys are ranked No. 4 in Class AA.
Gleason will be at home on Friday against Bruceton with the girls tipping off at 6 p.m.
Westview 67, Milan 24 (G)
Westview scored more points in the second period than Milan did the entire game on Tuesday, outscoring Milan 29-6 in the second to lead 42-12 at the half.
Westview kept up the scoring in the third period by putting 17 more points on the scoreboard.
Tiffany Rechis led all scorers with 19 points followed by 17 from Teddy Vincent and 10 points by Kendall Leyhue.
Gleason 46, BS 35 (G)
With all of the adversity the Lady Bulldogs have been through with head coach Joel Ayers’ health problems and not being able to coach, they are still finding ways to win.
Against Big Sandy, the Lady Bulldogs won at the free throw line and by Big Sandy turning the ball over 16 times.
Gleason went 19-for-24 at the line, while Big Sandy only made two trips to the line. The Lady Bulldogs also got Big Sandy to turn the ball over 16 times to their seven.
Big Sandy led 7-4 after one period of play with Gleason bouncing back and taking a 23-20 lead at halftime. Gleason outscored Big Sandy 12-11 in the third and 9-4 in the fourth.
Briana Jones led Gleason with 21 points followed by Jaclyn Montgomery with 11. Luz Mena led all scorers with 22 for Big Sandy.
Westview 76, Milan 41 (B)
The Chargers erupted for 49 second half points after leading 27-23 at the intermission. Westview outscored the Bulldogs 25-14 in the third period and 24-14 in the fourth.
Justin Johnson scored the game-high for Westview with 16 points and made three 3-pointers. Javier Gordon scored 14 and Tyquis Johnson added 12.
BS 67, Gleason 47 (B)
The Bulldogs fell back into an old habit that has hurt them this season by having one bad period.
Against Big Sandy, it happened in the third. Down by 10 with the score 31-21, the Bulldogs offense’ became a no-show in the third.
Big Sandy outscored Gleason 19-4 to take a 50-25 lead after three periods. The Bulldogs tried to mount a comeback, but the Red Devils were too far ahead at the beginning of the fourth period. Gleason outscored Big Sandy 22-17 in the final stanza.
Keaton Collins led Gleason with a game-high 16 points. Austin Perry added 11 for the Bulldogs and Dylan Reynolds scored nine. Published in The WCP 1.24.13
