Florence V. Gardner celebrates 99th b-day
Today is a special one for Martin resident Florence V. Gardner.
She celebrates her 99th birthday.
Born Jan. 24, 1914, she grew up in the Vincent Grove community.
“I’m history,” she said, referring to the many historic events she has seen throughout her life.
She said she still remembers walking through the country as a little girl of 7 to 8 years old.
It wasn’t easy, she said, considering she made those hikes with broken shoes.
Gardner received an early birthday present Tuesday in the form of new carpeting for her home.
The surprise gift came courtesy of a non-profit job from O.P. and Larlean Pratt.
Work was done, free of charge, by Mike Sowell of Creative Landscaping in Bradford and Donnie Jordan of DT Flooring in Jackson.
They replaced the old 1970s carpet, and Gardner said she was surprised and pleased with the birthday present.
Gardner said the key to happiness in her life has been faith in God and treating others as she would like to be treated.
