Guy Phipps Posted: Thursday, January 17, 2013 4:00 pm The Messenger, January 17, 2013 Guy Edward Phipps, 90, of Lebanon, a former resident of this area, passed away Jan. 15, 2013, at University Medical Center in Lebanon. Funeral services will be 6 p.m. today at Partlow Funeral Chapel in Lebanon, with interment following Friday at Middle Tennessee Veterans Cemetery in Nashville. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. He served as a teacher and basketball coach at Fulton High School from 1948-1956. He was a guidance counselor, teacher and assistant principal at Union City High School from 1956-1962 and, as a coach there, also took his team to two state quarterfinals and one state basketball championship game in 1960. He later was promoted to principal of that school in 1963. He served as a teacher and coach of David Lipscomb College from 1966-1968 and was state supervisor at the Tennessee State Department of Education from 1968-1971. He also served as dean of students of Nashville State Technical Institute from 1972 until his retirement in 1986. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Iona (King) Phipps; his daughter, Janice Sue Phipps; his grandson and his wife, Alan and Misty Harris; his granddaughter and her husband, Dana (Harris) and Anthony Hanson; his great-grandchildren and their spouses, Chris Harris, Tabitha and Brent Reed, Rachel and Timothy Harris, Matthew Hanson and Macy Hanson; his great-great-grandson, Joseph Harris; and four sisters and his brother-in-law, Dorothy Prince, Lucille Phipps, Maxine Phipps and Brenda and Joe Logan.
