Memphis pair earn
weekly TSWA honor University of Memphis guard Joe Jackson was named the Tennessee Sports Writers Association Men’s Basketball Player of the Week after helping the Tigers to an 85-80 road victory at Tennessee on Jan. 5.
The Memphis native posted 20 points, four rebounds and seven assists. He was 5-for-9 from the field with one 3-pointer and made 9-of-11 free throws.
Jackson leads the Tigers in scoring and assists this season, averaging 13.7 points and 4.6 assists along with grabbing 2.7 rebounds per game.
Memphis forward Nicole Dickson earned Tennessee Sports Writers Association Women’s Basketball Player of the Week accolades after averaging 24.5 points and 6.5 rebounds in a pair of victories last week.
Dickson leads the Tigers with 20.7 points and 6.6 rebounds per game this season. Memphis plays at Houston on Thursday and hosts Southern Miss on Sunday this week. Railroaders name
2013 season skipper Matt Hochstatter has been named manager of the Fulton Railroaders for the upcoming 2013 season.
Hochstatter served as the team’s pitching coach last season under skipper Albert Destrade. He is currently the pitching coach at St. Catherine College in Springfield, Ky.
The new manager has nearly finished putting together his roster for this year’s squad, which is expected to include four pitchers from Murray State.
Fulton finished second to the Hoptown Hoppers in both the regular season standings and postseason playoffs.

again reach 3.0 GPA For the second consecutive semester, student-athletes at UT Martin earned at least a 3.0 or better Grade Point Average.
One semester removed from a school-best 3.0 GPA, the student-athletes earned a 3.05 GPA for the Fall 2012 semester.
“I’m so proud of our student-athletes for achieving a 3.0 GPA for two consecutive semesters,” said Phil Dane, UT Martin athletics director. “And after drilling down into the details, it’s obvious to me that we can move the overall GPA even higher.”

in toy donations The UT Martin Department of Intercollegiate Athletics donated more than $2,000 worth of Toys to We Care Ministries in Martin after two recent basketball games against Southern Miss and Samford in the Elam Center.
We Care Ministries director Betty Baker said toys from UT Martin will serve as the kickoff for next year’s We Care Christmas store. “That is our biggest event of the year and we have to start collecting toys in January.”
