Post-Christmas gift for busy Lady Rebs is tournament win
Obion Central’s girls’ basketball team didn’t have much of a Christmas break.
The trade-off is that they have the opportunity to add to their already-impressive win total.
The Lady Rebels — who played for the sixth time in nine days Wednesday — began play in the 12th annual Dragon Fire Invitational Tournament with a 61-43 triumph over Millington at Collierville High School.
OC improved to 13-3 heading into today’s second round game against Southwind (3-8), a 62-13 victor over Sheffield in another game on Wednesday.
Central will play again on Friday and Saturday — win or lose — to conclude the first half of its 2012-13 schedule.
The remainder of the local teams will also play in holiday events at various venues beginning today.
The OC boys 6-6) will participate in the Nera White Christmas Tournament in Macon County, playing a first round game against Westmoreland at 6 p.m. The Rebels will also play in the event on Friday and Saturday.
Also included in the event are Lancaster Christian, Red Boling Springs, Cumber-land County, Jackson County, Trousdale County and Macon County.
Union City’s two teams are headed to separate locations — the girls (11-2) to the Hickman County (Tn.) Above the Rim Christmas Tournament, where they’ll face Ensworth today at 4 o’clock.
Other teams in the Middle Tennessee event are CPA, Dickson County, Waverly, Jackson County, Hickman County and Harding Academy.
The Golden Tornado boys (9-4) will be at Calloway County High School for the Murray Bank Laker Classic.
UC’s opener today vs. Centennial, Ohio, at 4:15 p.m. has been cancelled as weather conditions prevented the Buckeye State squad from making the trip.
The tournament also includes the host Lakers, Crockett County, Fulton City, Paducah Tilghman, Hopkinsville and Memphis ECS.
Both UC teams will play on Friday and Saturday, too, no matter their outcomes today.
South Fulton’s entries are in Dover for the Stewart County Christmas Classic, facing the host school tonight.
The Devilettes (7-4) play at 6 p.m., the Redmen (6-5) at 7:30.
SF’s girls will then play Cumberland County at 3 o’clock on Friday and Camden at the same time on Saturday.
The Big Red boys will play Houston County at 4:30 Friday and Camden at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
OC 61, Millington 43 (G)
Brandi Goodman and Ali McEwen both had 18 points and Paige Hicks added 12 for the Lady Rebels.
McEwen was seeing action for the first time since suffering a concussion on Friday in the Heritage Bank Hardwood Classic at Calloway County.
Central led at every turn — 9-6 after one quarter, 27-16 at the half, and 44-25 with three periods in the books.
OC also showed drastic improvement at the charity stripe from recent outings, making 20-of-26 free throws.
Tonight’s game vs. Southwind is set to begin at 6 p.m.
Another victory would put Obion Central in the tourney semifinals at 7:30 Friday night, while a loss tonight will put the county locals in Friday’s 3 p.m. game.
