Red Devils ride sweep into break

The final pre-Christmas middle school basketball games of the season Thursday night saw South Fulton sweep Hillcrest, the Black Oak boys beat Classical Academy of Dyersburg, and Lake Road and Ridgemont split.
All local squads will now take an extended holiday break with no games until at least the first week of 2013.
The following is a recap of Thursday’s action.
SF 30, Hillcrest 29 (G)
The Devilettes improved to 9-4 by sneaking out a one-point victory over the Lady Cougars.
Tiffany Potts had a busy night with seven points, nine rebounds, five steals and three assists for the Big Red. Emma Glisson and Diamond Smith both finished with six points and three steals, while Kennedy Sisson had five rebounds.
On the Hillcrest side, Courtney Heuck had 17 points, five rebounds and five steals. Macey Cox snatched down 15 rebounds for the Lady Cougars.
H’crest is now 7-3.
SF 43, Hillcrest 12 (B)
South Fulton pitched a first-quarter shutout and allowed just six points in each half to roll to a victory over the Cougars.
The Red Devils were up 22-6 at the half and posted a similar advantage (21-6) over the third and fourth quarters.
Jyriq Jones led the victors with 12 points, five steals and three assists while Zaccius Mays finished with a game-high 12 rebounds while scoring nine points and dishing out three assists. Demarco Walker tallied eight points for the Big Red.
Tyler Walton carried essentially all of the offensive load for Hillcrest (5-5) with nine of his team’s dozen markers. Walton made three 3-point shots.
Hillcrest’s next game is vs. Black Oak on Jan. 7.
BO 58, Class. Aca. 22 (B)
The Eagle boys dominated the second half to win for the 6th time this season.
BO led just 21-20 at the intermission but outscored the Dyersburg visitors by a whopping 37-2 count over the final two periods.
The Eagles posted a balanced scoring effort with three players in double figures and two more a bucket away.
Brandon Swift led the way with 14 points, while Jonathan Davis added 11 and Blake Jones scored 10. Chance Basham had nine points and Isaac Darnall contributed eight to the winning cause.
Swift also had eight rebounds while Davis finished with six and Basham hauled down five. Jones was credited with five assists and Darnall had four steals.
There was no girls’ game played.
Black Oak’s next action won’t be until 2013 when it plays at Hillcrest on Jan. 7.
LR 42, Ridgemont 17 (G)
The Lady Generals (9-3) completed a season sweep of R’mont, outscoring the Mustang girls 33-10 in the second half to break open a tight 9-7 game.
Jenna Smith had 12 points, nine steals and three assists to pace the winning effort while teammate Taylor Heathcock had 10 points and six rebounds.
Lindsey Craddock finished with eight points and seven steals, while Dharma Grinder had seven points and Rachel Dunn six boards.
For Ridgemont, Carley Bramlett and Allie Johnson both scored five points and McClay Ferrell had four.
Ridgemont 44, LR 8 (B)
J.P. Jones and Alden Marvin each tallied seven markers, while Dalton Bridgewater finished with six for the victors.
Emmanuel Morgan pulled down six rebounds.
Lake Road, which failed to score in the first half, got three points apiece from Mason Davidson and Will Jones.
The Generals’ next game is Jan. 10 vs. Hillcrest at home in a makeup of a postponed contest on Dec. 10.
