Local teams travel near and far for holiday season hoop gifts
From Memphis to Murray and Dover, too, Obion County’s six prep basketball teams will take their holiday spirit on the road the next two weeks.
The girls’ and boys’ teams from Obion County Central, South Fulton and Union City will be involved in tournaments and classics before and after Christmas, beginning today.
The Lady Rebels will be busy, playing in both the Heritage Bank Hardwood Classic at Calloway County before Christmas and then in the 12th annual Dragon Fire Invitational at Collierville after Christmas.
At Calloway, the Lady Rebs will play Memphis East 6:30 p.m. Thursday and Jackson South Side 5 p.m. Friday before concluding the event with two games in seeded tournament play on Saturday.
The Lady Rebels, East and South Side are part of Pool D. Pool A includes Calloway, Clarksville Northwest and Whitley County, Ky. Pool B has Dyersburg, Ballard Memorial and Liberty Tech. Pool C includes Lexington, Graves County and Houston County.
Central will then play four more games in Collierville, beginning 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 26 against Millington.
The 16-team Dragon Fire also has host Collierville, Byhalia, Marion, Kirby, Whitehaven, Cordova, Manassas, Columbia Cen-tral, Jonesboro, Houston, the FCA Nighthawks, Bolton, Southwind and Memphis ECS.
Play will continue through Dec. 29th.
The Rebel boys will play three games in the Nera White Christmas Tournament, opening up with Westmoreland 6 p.m. Dec. 27th.
The Nera White event is an eight-team, three-day double-bracket tourney that ends on Dec. 29th.
Also included in the event are Lancaster Christian, Red Boling Springs, Cumberland County, Jackson County, Trousdale County and Macon County.
Both South Fulton teams will play in a three-day classic at Stewart County in Dover, each getting one game a day.
The Red Devil teams will play back-to-back all days, both facing the host Rebels at 6 and 7:30 p.m. Dec. 27th and then the girls playing Cumberland County at 3 p.m. and the boys facing Houston County at 4:30 on Dec. 28th.
SF will finish against Camden on Dec. 29th, the boys at 1:30 and the girls at 3.
Union City’s boys will quickly move on from Friday night’s game at Westview with a one-game stint in the Lynx Holiday Classic at Lausanne in Memphis, playing Olive Branch, Miss., 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
The Lynx event will host 14 games over two days.
The Golden Tornado boys will be right back in action after Christmas, playing in the eight-team, three-day double-bracket Murray Bank Laker Classic at Calloway County High School.
Union City opens up against Centennial, Ohio, 4:15 p.m. Dec. 27.
The tournament also includes the host Lakers, Crockett County, Fulton City, Paducah Tilghman, Hopkinsville and Memphis ECS.
Union City’s girls will play in the Hickman County Above The Rim Christmas Invitational Dec. 27-29.
Also an eight-team event double brackets (winners’ and losers’), UC opens against Ensworth at 4 p.m.
Other teams in the Middle Tennessee event are Christ Presbyterian, Dickson County, Waverly, Jackson County, Hickman County and Harding Academy. Published in THe Messenger 12.20.12
