|Cougars, SF double up on wins |

|Both Hillcrest and South Fulton were double winners in local middle school basketball Monday night. |
The Cougars swept Fulton City, winning the boys’ barnburner 28-26 after rolling to a 36-21 victory in the girls’ contest.
SF had no trouble with Ridgemont in either game, winning the opener 43-9 and the nightcap 56-29.
Elsewhere on the middle school hardwood Monday, Black Oak split a pair of games vs. Yorkville/Spring Hill, winning the girls’ game 25-15, before dropping the boys’ encounter 58-42. Union City also went 1-1, beating Martin in the boys’ game 62-33, after losing 46-8 in the girls’ opener.
Meanwhile, Lake Road was beaten twice by Lake County, 30-27 in overtime in girls’ play, and 50-8 in Game 2
The following is a recap of those games reported to the Messenger sports department.
Hillcrest 28, FC 26 (B)
Rhett Thomas Fussell made 3-of-4 3-pointers as the Cougars (5-4) moved over the .500 mark with a close victory.
Hillcrest trailed 18-14 at the half, but a 9-3 third quarter gave the Cougars a 23-21 lead heading into the final frame.
Greg Nance and Hunter Brown added eight points each to the winning cause, with Nance also having seven rebounds and four steals. Brown hauled down six caroms.
Hillcrest 36, FC 19 (G)
The Lady Cougars are now 7-2 after winning vs. Fulton.
Courtney Heuck recorded a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds to pace the victors.
Macey Cox was just short of that status with eight points and 10 rebounds along with four steals. McClain Bell added eight points to the winning effort.
Hillcrest hosts South Fulton on Thursday.
SF 43, Ridgemont 9 (G)
The Devilettes jumped all over R’mont with a 21-1 first-quarter blitz and never looked back.
South Fulton built on its lead with a 10-0 second quarter before the Lady Mustangs got their first basket in the third period.
Emma Glisson had 12 points and Tiffany Potts eight for the Devilettes.
SF 56, Ridgemont 29 (B)
The Redmen outscored R’mont 30-12 over the middle two quarters to complete the sweep.
Zaccius Mays had 17 points, seven rebounds and four steals for South Fulton and was joined by Jyriq Jones in double figures in the scoring department with 10. Jones also had seven boards.
Kody Davidson added eight points and Hayden Kelly pitched in seven.
South Fulton is back in action again tonight at Black Oak in a makeup game.
BO 25, Yorkville/SH 15 (G)
Nellina Wooten had 13 points and Bethany Gardner finished with nine points and 10 rebounds as the Black Oak girls were triumphant.
The Lady Eagles led 7-3 after one, 16-7 at halftime and 23-11 with three periods in the book.
South Fulton visits the Eagles’ Nest tonight in a game rescheduled from Dec. 10
Yorkville/SH 58, BO 42 (B)
Jonathan Davis had 12 points and eight rebounds, but it wasn’t enough for BO to complete a sweep against the Gibson County entry.
Isaac Darnall scored 10 point for the Eagles, who were down just 25-22 at the half, but outscored 33-20 over the final two frames.
Blake Jones added nine markers to the Black Oak cause.
UC 62, Martin 33 (B)
Jeremy Bumpus led three Golden Tornado players in double figures with 16 points as Union City took control early and never let up.
Bumpus also had eight rebounds, while Willaevion Burton had 12 points and eight boards and Jamarquay Brooks pitched in 10 points and seven rebounds.
The Twisters jumped out to an 18-8 lead and led 31-18 at the half. The margin was 21 points, 46-25, after three periods.
Union City improves to 10-1 on the season.
Martin 46, UC 8 (G)
The Lady Twisters were no match for Martin in Game 1, failing to make a field goal in either the second or fourth quarter.
It was 14-4 Panthers at the first-period horn and 29-4 at the intermission after a run of 15 unanswered points by the visitors.
Lake Co. 30, LR 27, OT (G)
The Lady Generals couldn’t duplicate an earlier win over LC, losing a heartbreaker.
Lake Road was assessed two technical fouls in the contest, according to head coach Emily McGee.
LR was ahead 20-14 heading into the fourth stanza, but a 11-5 Lake County run forced the extra session.
Bryleigh Jennings, Taylor Heathcock and Rachel Dunn tallied seven points apiece for Lake Road. Heathcock had a big night on the boards with 15 rebounds. Jenna Smith had six rebounds and four steals.
Lake Road plays at Ridgemont on Thursday.
Lake Co. 50, LR 8 (B)
The LR boys are still in search of their first win after dropping their 11th straight outing.
The Generals failed to score in the second half.
Blake Huggins had four points and three rebounds for Lake Road, with Thomas Mathis and Ryan Southerland accounting for the team’s other points. Published in The Messenger 12.18.12
