Close call, blowout
part of UCMS sweep

Union City earned a sweep over Northview in middle school basketball action Monday night, taking a close 34-32 verdict in the girls’ opener and then pulling away for a 48-21 decision in the nightcap.
Alivia Bishop topped the Lady Tornadoes.
UC led 10-7 after one period but then trailed 21-19 at the half. The teams were knotted at 29 at the end of three quarters.
The Twister boys, now 8-1 overall and 4-1 in the West Tennessee Athletic Conference, took control early with a 13-4 lead after one period and 21-13 halftime advantage. UC then outscored the home team 27-9 in the second half.
Jermize Weddle led UC with 11 points, and both Tarius Pirtle and Quentrail Polk added nine as a total of nine Twister players scored.
Union City will host Halls on Thursday night, play beginning at 6.

Generals-Cougars
have make-up date

One make-up date is set.
Hillcrest and Lake Road will play their junior high basketball doubleheader on Jan. 10. The game was to have been played for Monday night but was postponed as part of the Obion County School System’s two-day shutdown as a result of a flu outbreak throughout the county.
By moving the games to Jan. 10, Lake road now has to reschedule two dates with Martin Middle School.
The two were slated to play this past Friday and also on Jan. 10. No dates have been set for those make-ups.

UTM’s Hughes, Sims
tabbed All-America

UT Martin senior defensive tackle Montori Hughes and senior wide receiver Quentin Sims have been named to the 2012 The Sports Network/Fathead.com FCS All-America Teams announced earlier Monday afternoon.
Hughes, who transferred to UTM from Tennessee, finished the regular season with 42 tackles, 8.5 TFLs, four sacks and 13 quarterback hurries.
The Murfreesboro native was named to The Sports Network/Fathead.com FCS second team All-America defensive squad.. He was also named to the Ohio Valley Conference first-team defense.
Sims, also an All-OVC first team selection, was named to The Sports Network/Fathead.com FCS All-America third team.
Sims had 86 catches for 1,092 yards and 16 touchdowns. The 16 touchdowns in one season is a new OVC record. Published in The Messenger 12.11.12
