A Grinch-like theft and an act of vandalism have put a damper on the Town of Hornbeak’s Christmas.
The city’s Christmas tree was stolen and other portions of a holiday display were vandalized sometime Sunday night, according to Hornbeak Mayor Dennis Dozier.
The artificial tree was decorated with large bows and ornaments and it was flanked by several packages, all lit up by a spotlight for the community’s enjoyment. The display was placed in front of Hornbeak City Hall on the Hornbeak Bestway store parking lot island, just off West Main Street.
Dozier said the tree is gone, while the packages underneath were turned over and stomped and the light cords were cut. The tree had been lighted as part of the city’s Christmas decorations the last three or four years.
“It was just meanness,” Dozier said.
The mayor said police and city officials will be checking with Bestway’s management to see if the store’s security cameras captured the incident.
