’Jackets, Westview get league boosts

District basketball action is in full gear now with Westview and Greenfield all picking up wins on Tuesday.
The Lady Chargers claimed a 70-36 District 13AA win over Haywood County while the Lady Yellowjackets took care of District 14A foe Trenton 48-15.
The Chargers got a 72-69 overtime over Haywood County after the Tomcats made a fourth period comeback. The Yellowjackets took advantage of the short-handed Golden Tide in their 75-53 win.
WV 70, Haywood 36
Four Lady Chargers scored in double figures with Tiffany Rechis and Teddy Vincent each eclipsing 20 points on Tuesday.
Rechis scored a game-high 22 points while Vincent was right behind with 21. Jasmine Howard added 11 and Kaley Leyhue chipped in 10 as the Lady Chargers improved to 3-0 in the district and 7-1 overall.
A slow first period turned into an onslaught in the second period as the Lady Chargers erupted for 25 points in the period. Rechis scored 12 of her 22 points in period.
Westview kept adding on to the margin in the third period by scoring 21 more points and holding the Lady Tomcats to eight. Vincent scored eight points in the third period, while Howard scored seven of her 11 points in the third frame.
G’field 48, Trenton 15
The Lady Tide did not offer up much of a challenge on Tuesday as Greenfield improved to 2-1 in District 14A and 5-2 overall.
Rachel Roberts and Brittany Peoples shared the game-high with 11 points.
McCall Scates added six points to the Greenfield cause followed by Ashton Pence with five.
Greenfield held Trenton to a mere basket in both the second and third periods to add to the Lady Tide’s misery.
WV 72, Haywood 69
The Chargers saw a 50-43 third period lead erode as the Tomcats battled back in the final period to send it into overtime.
Westview opened up the extra frame with a six-point run, but the Tomcats came right back with a pair of 3-pointers by Jeffery Starks. Javier Gordon gave the Chargers a 71-69 lead on a basket with 19 second to play.
Antonio Hogard made it a three-point game when he hit 1-of-2 free throws. Starks tried to send it into a second overtime, but his 3-point attempt fell short at the buzzer.
The win keeps Westview’s record unblemished in District 13AA at 3-0. The Chargers are now 7-2 overall.
Five Westview players scored in double figures with Jordan Davis scoring a game-high 21. Jazell Baker and Justin Johnson each scored 12 points, while Hogard and Gordon popped in 11 points each.
G’field 75, Trenton 53
The Golden Tide were missing one of their starters because of the flu and another one had to sit out the second half because of flu-like symptoms.
That was all the Yellowjackets needed to remain perfect on the season with a 6-0 record and 3-0 in District 14A.
Five Yellowjackets reached double-digit scoring with Hunter Crouse leading the way with his game-high 20 points.
Tony Robinson was not far behind Crouse with 15 points. Tyler Hoke scored 14 while Zack Grooms and Jeremy Lannom scored 10 points each.
The ’Jackets put the game out of reach in the final period by outscoring the Golden Tide 22-8 and 43-25 in the second half. Published in The WCP 12.6.12
