Charles D. Wicks, 85, of Madisonville, Ky, passed away Dec. 5, 2012, at his residence. He was the father of Mrs. Tim (Mary Jo) Purdy of Union City.
Service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Barnett-Strother Funeral Home in Madisonville, with the Rev. Tondra Daugherty officiating. Burial will follow there in Odd Fellows Cemetery. Military graveside services will be performed by the Hopkins County Honor Guard.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. today and from 11 a.m. until the service time on Friday at the funeral home. There will be a Masonic Service at 5:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Dannie Hill Wicks, Justin Ray Purdy, Daniel Ray Purdy, Gordon Cletus Foster, Wayne Allen Stone and George Foster. Honorary pallbearers will be Chris Mayhew, Timothy Wicks and Jon Fulkerson.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital.
He was born March 17, 1927 in Hopkins County, Ky., son of the late Hobart McKinley and Lois Pauline (Knight) Wicks.
A World War II U.S. Navy Veteran, he retired after 40 years from Peabody Coal Co. He was a member and Past Master and 32nd degree Mason of the E.W. Turner Masonic Lodge No. 548 F&AM, a member of the Scottish Rite and Rizpah Temple and a member of Liberty Baptist Church. He loved the outdoors and camping, he enjoyed woodworking, spending time with his family and spoiling his grandkids. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Betty (Hill) Wicks; another daughter, Charlotte (Kay) Wicks of Madisonville; his son, Danny (Carrie) Hill Wicks of Madisonville; his sister, Julia Foster of Madisonville; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Martha Ann Wicks, who died in 1955; his brother; and two sisters.
